Producer’s Guild of America Weekend Shorts Competition features New Hampshire team

Shooting in Scenic & Film Friendly Claremont, NH, Sept. 23-25, 2011

The newly formed production group Granite Creek is producing a short film as part of the Producer's Guild of America (PGA) inaugural Weekend Shorts Competition benefiting the Debra Hill Fellowship, Sept. 23-25, with production offices opening Friday morning at 101 Mulberry Street in Claremont, NH.

The Guild has lined-up an impressive array of judges including Actors Steve Buscemi, Jamie Lee Curtis, Paul Reubens, and Lesley Ann Warren, and Producers Bruce Cohen and Stacey Sher. Each of the judges had the opportunity to work closely with Producer Debra Hill during her impressive career; Hill produced hits such as HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM LA, and THE FISHER KING.

Producers for Granite Creek include Dana Biscotti Myskowski of Green Chair Pictures in Henniker, NH; Aaron Wiederspahn of Either/Or Films in Keene, and Adam Richard Jones, a commercials director who lives in Henniker and works out of NYC; the trio will also write the short script. In addition, Wiederspahn will direct.

In addition, tremendously talented New Hampshire film artists are teaming up with fabulous filmmakers from the Boston area and from LA to produce a 3-5 minute short film. Locations Supervisor Nick Koloski has helped the team find a place to call home during the shoot: the giant warehouse on Mulberry Street, which is home to Time-Out Sports Bar and Grill, a.k.a. the crew’s commissary during the weekend.

As per the competition guidelines, all cast and crew are volunteering their time, and gear and food have been donated both by individuals and by Northeast rental houses. Many local businesses have also joined the spirit of the Debra Hill Fellowship, a 501(c)(3) that has been established to honor Hill’s commitment to paying it back and helping student producers break into the business.

Production officially begins at 5:01 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 when the PGA announces the requirements of the film competition. After a quick brainstorming session, the core production team will break into small groups as one team writes the script, one designs the musical score, one fans out to prep and dress locations and to secure props, one begins assembling opening and closing film titles, and one designs the costumes for our actors.

On Saturday, Sept. 24 Granite Creek will shoot the entire film. About a dozen extras are on-call to join the team for some scenes, if necessary. Additionally, Saturday’s crew will swell with the addition of hair, make-up, and wardrobe crews, and additional production assistants. A stills photographer and a behind-the-scenes video crew will capture the magic of the day.

Sunday will be a quiet, mostly in-house day, as producers and directors work closely with the post-production team to complete the film. Should additional "B-roll" shots be necessary, Claremont residents may spy a small camera crew filming last-second ambiance shots of the charming city and countryside.

The deadline is 8 p.m. to upload the video over the Internet to the LA offices of the PGA via WithoutABox, a website that hosts film competitions from around the globe.

Numerous vendors and suppliers have generously donated items to the team including Granite Ledge Coffee of Canterbury, NH; Alyson’s Orchard of Walpole, NH; Time-Out Sports Bar & Grill in Claremont; Glass and Gear in Amherst, NH; The Performer’s Playground in Newport, NH; FastLights.com in Western Massachusetts; Chamberlain Springs, LLC, NH2O in Alton, NH; White Mountain Kettle Corn, LLC, in Henniker; Bagel Works of Keene, and more.

Special thanks to the City of Claremont for hosting the team during this endurance race to produce a film with about 60 crew members in 51 hours—something Granite Creek is hoping will bring increased appreciation for the area when the film is judged alongside entries from around the country, and in LA. Thanks also to the New Hampshire Film and Television Office for their support and guidance.

Post-production stills and a complete cast and crew list will be posted to the new Granite Creek website after the weekend. Follow http://granitecreek.weebly.com/ for updates.
