"Ear Whacks" from NH filmmaker Alfred Catalfo, now on YouTube

[Received this notice from NH filmmaker Alfred Thomas Catalfo:]

Hi Everyone,

We're very happy to announce that our newest film, EAR WHACKS, is now live on YouTube as a 2009 Sundance Film Festival Project Direct entry! Project Direct is a cool concept: Film entries must be under 5 minutes, use a red telephone for a prop (Moviefone is the sponsor) and use two other props from a list of 25 which are all from films made famous at Sundance. Our props were a severed ear (Reservoir Dogs), instant photos (Memento), and a wedding dress (Four Weddings and a Funeral).

For EAR WHACKS, we had a somewhat crazy idea to repurpose some of The Stag Hunt footage by writing a new script, shooting several new scenes and doing an entirely new 5-minute film with a completely different storyline -- a dark comedy about a gambling addict whose best friend lends him an ear. We hope you enjoy it. Please watch the film in High Quality if you have a fast connection speed. If you feel the urge to give us a nice rating and some positive comments and help us get the word out, we'd appreciate it!

New Musical Web Series is a Head Above the Rest

[Received this press release from New Hampshire filmmaker, John Herman.]

Remember when the best video on the web was a kid falling off his skateboard? Those days are over. A new musical web series aims to turn web video expectations on its head... literally. The surreal show follows the lives of three friends who have food items for heads. You heard right. Odd Noggin Land debuts with bi-weekly episodes starting December 15th. The first episode can be seen now at oddnoggin.com.

New Hampshire artists John Herman and Ryan Plaisted conceived the show while meeting for the first time. "We met for coffee to discuss creative projects," explains Herman. "Within minutes we were plotting episodes. Two days later we were shooting with a cast of actors. We ran with the idea."

One of the greatest challenges of the new show is generating a good take from an actor performing beneath a cumbersome mask. "Making an episode of Odd Noggin Land is like acting by proxy," says Brian Paul, who plays a man with a gigantic cheeseburger for a head. "You can't see what you're doing. You can't see what the other actors are doing.
You just act and hope it looks intelligent."

The show creators hope Odd Noggin Land's mix of catchy songs and surreal visuals will attract an audience who appreciate the strange work as much as they do. "When you can say to somebody you've just met, 'let's make a musical web series about people with giant food items instead of human heads,' and that idea is received, considered, and even embraced, that's probably an indicator that you're compatible," says Plaisted. "Maybe that makes John and me the Odd Noggins."

Get a look at the new show at oddnoggin.com New episodes will debut every other week starting December 15th.

El mundo en el 2030

Predicciones, estudios o simples deseos...

No tan maravilloso

Scott Kirsner Gives a Glimpse Inside the Movies and the Creative Economy

Technology and the arts come together in an intriguing evening with the author and columnist at the Portsmouth Library on December 10th

What is the creative economy? What is an example of technology coming together with the arts in the creative economy? How are the arts and technology communities working together now in New England, New Hampshire and the Seacoast and how might they come together in the future and contribute to the areas’ economic and cultural vitality?

Scott Kirsner will address these questions and more in a Portsmouth presentation based on his new book, Inventing the Movies: Hollywood's Epic Battle Between Innovation and the Status Quo. Kirsner comes to Portsmouth after talks at Netflix, Google, Disney, the Rome Film Festival and the Boston Museum of Science. The presentation will be at the Portsmouth Public Library at 175 Parrott Avenue on Wednesday, December 10 starting at 5:30 PM. The event is free and open to the public.

For over ten years Scott has been writing about innovation for publications like the Boston Globe, the New York Times, Wired, Variety, Fast Company, the Hollywood Reporter, Salon.com, BusinessWeek, and Newsweek. A central theme to his writing and research is the question “how do innovations that matter get introduced to the world?”

Kirsner calls out the common challenges for all entrepreneurs, "I've been focused on innovation, and especially innovation in the New England region, for the past decade. In looking at the technological history of the movie industry -- some of it sparked by New England companies, believe it or not -- I found that it offers lessons for people trying to innovate in any field. Ideas that change industries are almost always met with phenomenal resistance."

“The film production industry has changed dramatically over the last decade,” says Van McLeod, commissioner of the Department of Cultural Resources which houses the New Hampshire Film and Television Office. “With all of the advances in technology through the production process to distribution, filmmakers have capitalized on these innovations and have brought a once out-of-reach industry right into their own backyards. I think this program will provide some very useful information and inspiration to our New England filmmakers who have always had to rely on a plenty of Yankee ingenuity to get their films made.”

The evening is being hosted by the Portsmouth Public Library with sponsorship from Borealis Ventures, Catapult Seacoast Young Professionals, eCoast Angel Network, NH Film and Television Office, NH High Tech Council and the University of New Hampshire Whittemore School of Business and Economics along with the UNH School of Sociology and Film Studies. Come see, hear and talk about the creative economy – how the arts and technology come together – in the past, in the present and in the future.

The organizers of the event, Jesse Devitte of Borealis Ventures in Portsmouth and Ross Gittell from the UNH Whittemore School of Business and Economics, along with all the sponsors encourage entrepreneurs from both the technology and arts communities to attend and enjoy their shared trip through the history of film and discuss opportunities for the technology and arts communities in New Hampshire and on the Seacoast to come together in the future.

Planning started for 2009 New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival

The New Hampshire Film and Television Office is pleased to announce that it will present its second annual New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, and students are encouraged to start planning and producing their projects for submission!

Our inaugural film festival, held this past May, was a huge success, having screened twenty student-produced short films representing fourteen high schools from around New Hampshire. Five of those films were selected as award winners and shown before public audiences at this year’s New Hampshire Film Festival in Portsmouth and the Somewhat North of Boston Film Festival in Concord. The films from these talented students ranged from historical documentaries to dramas to comedies and experimental music videos.

An important part of our mission at the New Hampshire Film and Television Office has always been to support and promote the efforts of our New Hampshire filmmakers, and student filmmakers are no exception. We feel student filmmaking is an exciting and essential piece of our industry here in New Hampshire, and we’re looking forward to again providing this opportunity to our state’s young talent.

The New Hampshire Film and Television Office will be getting information to all the high schools throughout the state about the 2009 New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival shortly. The submission period opens February 1, 2009 and closes on March 31, 2009. More details are available on the Film Festival website at www.nhstudentfilm.com.

MergingArts and Red River Theaters premiere Second Annual Short Short Story Film Festival

[Received this press release from Toni Pennacchia from MergingArts Productions on an upcoming short film festival at Red River Theatres in Concord.]

One-Day Event to Feature Over Thirty Films That Tell A Story In Five Minutes Or Less.

CONCORD, NH – A unique one-day event is coming this November 29th to Concord, New Hampshire. Co-presented by MergingArts Productions and The Red River Theatres, the second annual Short Short Story Film Festival will make its debut at The Red River at 11 South Main Street in downtown Concord. The festival will feature screenings throughout the day and the event is open to the public.

The festival will feature films of five minutes or less in length, all of which tell a story. Toni Pennacchia, Director of MergingArts Productions, says "Our idea is to present a wide variety of themes and moods in less than the time of a typical Hollywood movie. Most short film festivals allow for films of 10, 15, or more minutes in length. We wanted to keep things 'short and sweet' so to speak."

She continues, "Some pieces less than five minutes are trailers, music videos, public service announcements, or experimental non-narrative pieces. I wanted to keep the focus on story – films with a beginning, middle, and end. It's a greater challenge for the filmmaker, but it engages the audience more fully."

The festival made its debut in November of 2007, playing to a packed house in Providence, RI. For 2008, the festival organizers wanted to travel the festival to other areas in New England. "We wanted to find communities in New England where there is a good base of support for independent artists," says Pennacchia. "With The Red River in Concord, we have found a shared vision of entertaining and enlightening the New Hampshire public."

The festival will include more than thirty films in all, from as far away as Australia and Russia, and including a few entries from New England area filmmakers. Films are to be presented in two programs, the first consisting of lighter, more family-friendly fare called Heartstrings, and the second being a little edgier or darker called Headtrip.

Both live-action and animated films will be shown, running the gamut of styles, including Don't Make a Scene, a self-referential satire from New York City, My Happy End, a sentimental "tail" of friendship from Berlin, and The Heist, a sort of science fiction morality play from Vancouver. Pennacchia concludes, "If you are looking for something different to do after eating all the turkey you can handle on Thanksgiving, this is a great change of pace for both adults and kids."

MergingArts Productions is an organization dedicated to promoting music, visual arts, technology and media, bringing these elements to a variety of communities both locally and globally.

Red River Theatres' mission is to present film and the discussion of film as a way to entertain, broaden horizons and deepen appreciation of life for New Hampshire audiences of all ages.

Great Northern Video now renting equipment

[Received this notice from Great Northern Video in Pembroke, NH.]

Due to customer requests over the years Great Northern Video has finally decided to open up a rental division. Our clients clearly see the short-term benefits of renting and we have taken the progressive step to adapt to the changes in the market to benefit our customers. Before offing rentals customers would have to travel to Massachusetts to rent equipment and be subjected to traffic, high rental costs, time spent, taxes, and high gas costs.

Renting equipment allows you to test in real world applications to find out which equipment better serves your need. You can have significant cost savings and less complexity versus in-house management of own equipment. All our equipment is new and meticulously maintained and serviced. With major changes in technology and the current state of the economy, renting might be a better choice for you and your short-term needs.

Great Northern Video rents cameras, Steadicam’s, projectors, wireless mics, edit systems, green screens, batteries and power supplies, lighting kits, tripods, monitors, jibs, the RED One camera system, etc. All our equipment is backed up with experts, with hands on real world application experience. Want to rent equipment but need some training? Great Northern Video offers training on lighting, cameras, support, editing, and sound at the lowest rates in the country.

Our rental program is fairly unique in that we offer 1 day, 3 day and 7-day rentals. The 3-day rental is the cost of 2 days and the 7-day rental is the cost of 3 days, so there is a significant cost savings over traditional rental houses. The rental department at Great Northern Video is currently accepting equipment reservations. It has already caught on and we have several projects coming to town that we are providing equipment for. We are officially open for rentals and we look forward to your business.
