Heroes Among Us, Universal Studios

Hey Everyone!
Since many of you have enjoyed my posts on my red carpet dresses on Facebook and Twitter, I decided that my closet deserved a page of its own.  Also, I think my male friends would rather pass on looking at dresses, shoes, and accessories, so this will spare them any Sex and the City pain.
So, here is my first post from last night's red carpet.  I was covering the Heroes Among Us show for Focus Hollywood..  Honorees included Kathy Ireland and Nancy Davis while celebrities from Tatyana Ali, Erik Estrada, and the delicious Greg Ellis made appearances.
My dress is from a fantastic store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria:  Indulge.  The dress designer is Style Biz.  The shoes were the most expensive thing on me last night, my favorite Stuart Weitzman shoes recycled from my DGA Awards outfit in 2007.  The gold belt was a recent purchase from Express and my bracelets were from H & M.  So, an affordable night on the red carpet.  The dress now goes back into the closet.  And that is your Red Carpet Closet report for today.

"Swanzey Rural Character" to screen on May 30

The world premiere of Swanzey Rural Character will take place at the Monadnock Regional High School auditorium on Saturday, May 30, with showings at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. The film is an hour long, and admission is free.

In 2008, the Swanzey Open Space Committee asked Monadnock Regional High School junior Evan Barlow to consider a special project: a celebration of Swanzey people, places and history.

Inspired by over sixty-five interviews, Barlow has captured Swanzey’s unique rural character on film. The movie represents a distillation of seventy hours of footage, hundreds of photographs, and close to five hundred hours of the teenager’s volunteer service. Barlow also designed all the film’s promotional materials, as well as packaging of the DVD. The work serves as Barlow’s senior project, a Monadnock Regional High School requirement for graduation.

“Originally, we imagined a handful of interviews with citizens who have protected their land with conservation easements,” says Victoria Reck Barlow, chair of the Open Space Committee. “Instead, the interviews became a giant chain letter, with each person insisting that Evan had to talk with these other people, who really know great stories. Evan took it all in, and created a film that is as lyrical and moving as it is beautiful.”

Grammy award-winning cellist Eugene Friesen donated his music to the project. Erik Ewers, senior editor at Ken Burn’s Florentine Films, is project advisor.

“This is partly a story about Swanzey’s people, places and history,” says Reck Barlow, “and partly a story about a seventeen-year-old who composed a love letter to a small New England town.”

The citizens of most small towns want to protect the rural character of their communities. The Swanzey Open Space Committee makes this charge their business. In addition to helping landowners with conservation easements – the group’s core mission – Open Space Committee members have found ways to celebrate the unique qualities of their town.

Some of the ways are simple, like the Swanzey Rural Character button -- wear it, and you are one. Some are conspicuous, like the oxen Buck and Ike, Swanzey’s ambassadors of open space protection and biggest stars of The Old Homestead. Some are elaborate, like the Committee’s annual party in honor of newly minted conservation easement holders. And some ways take place behind the scenes at Town Hall, where group members work with maps and advisors to help guide Town planning decisions in support of rural character.

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it,” said the philosopher Goethe. Members of the Open Space Committee will tell you that they never could have imagined where many of the group’s projects would take them, and what they might learn or accomplish along the way.

Swanzey’s reputation for doing a lot with a little relates only to money. The Open Space Committee achieves its enormous success by recognizing that Swanzey is wealthy beyond measure in people -- from a seventeen-year-old journeyman filmmaker to the town historians he interviewed. Swanzey Rural Character is the proof.

Iron Bride TV Winners Announced

[Received this press release from George Jobel at Iron Brides™.]

Iron Brides™ is a New England based Reality TV show. Season I voting has been completed and two winners have been announced.

New England’s own reality television show, Iron Brides™, today announced their Season I (New Hampshire) winners. The show’s Executive Producer, George C. Jobel, said “We are very proud of the tremendous efforts put forth by these amazing women. Eight strangers arrived for the first day of shooting. Eight self confident comrades departed the last day, eager to face the future.”

Engaged women, 21 or older, who planned to hold their ceremonies anywhere in New Hampshire, Southern Maine or Northern Massachusetts after February 1, 2009, were eligible to audition as contestants. Jobel reported about 75 women registered online, 45 actually submitted video auditions or attended open auditions held throughout NH and about 35 signed eligibility contracts with the show.

Two grand prize winners have been announced: Tricia Comi, 31, of Portsmouth NH, for the highest competition point tally, and Kylin Szlosek, 29, of Hampton, for the online popular vote of the public. Each will receive wedding videography services from Iron Brides Productions LLC and wedding photography from Rhapsody Studios, Methuen, Massachusetts. Each winner’s package is valued at $9,000.

The other contestants will not be left out however. Jobel reports the show will be offering all of the non-winning eligible contestants videography services equal to the grand prize winners’. “The girls are all winners in our view, and this is the very least they deserve” said Jobel.

While the show doesn't boot contestants, the show's rules make brides whose engagements dissolve ineligible for prizes. For this reason, Darlene Ramsey withdrew from competition.

Contestants receiving the videography packages include:

Amy Dole, Gonic, NH
Jennifer Lessard, Somersworth, NH
Tarryn Brandl, Milford, NH
Nicole Corvini, Melrose, MA
Vania Crevier, Belmont, NH

Comi won by doing the best among 17 individual competitions during the season. Competitions included indoor skydiving, physical training, cooking, snowshoeing, and more. Szlosek won by receiving 6,408 votes of the 16,552 vote cast.

Season I episodes are available free at the show’s website, www.IronBrides.TV. Taping for Season II (Boston / Cape Cod) begins June 6th and is slated to air beginning October 1, 2009.
