On sending notices to the Film Office

The New Hampshire Film and Television Office regularly receives press releases and notices from members of the state's industry which we disseminate to our network of media, government and industry contacts both in and out-of-state. There are times, however, when a notice, for whatever reason, does not make it to our email inbox. Our spam filter can be finicky and can sometimes mistakenly quarantine legitimate messages. We suggest that if you are sending a notice to us, please address it to us as a direct recipient at film@nh.gov, as our filter has been known to occasionally pull aside messages sent to bulk recipients. We also encourage you to follow-up with us to confirm that we have received it or to alert us that a notice is forthcoming.

Your news is important to us, and we hope these tips will help ensure that your continued updates are received and distributed to our network promptly.

"Bad Voodoo's War" airs on PBS' Frontline

Bad Voodoo's War, a film by New Hampshire filmmaker Deborah Scranton, aired on Frontline April 1. The film is a follow-up to Scranton's 2006 acclaimed film, The War Tapes.

In June 2007, as the American military surge reached its peak, a band of National Guard infantrymen who call themselves "The Bad Voodoo Platoon" was deployed to Iraq. To capture a vivid, first-person account of the new realities of war in Iraq for Frontline and ITVS, Scranton created "a virtual embed" with the platoon, supplying cameras to the soldiers so they could record and tell the story of their war. The film intimately tracks the veteran soldiers of "Bad Voodoo" through the daily grind of their perilous mission, dodging deadly IEDs, grappling with the political complexities of dealing with Iraqi security forces, and battling their fatigue and their fears.

Bad Voodoo's War can be seen in its entirety here.

New Hampshire film industry featured in latest MovieMaker Magazine

The latest issue of MovieMaker Magazine (Issue No. 74, Volume 15 - with Christina Ricci on the cover) spotlights the Granite State and its film industry and features testimonials from filmmakers on why they love New Hampshire.

The article, "Live Free and Make Movies in New Hampshire", written by Andrew Gnerre, features quotes from Ernest Thompson, Mark Constance, Afton Grant, Sean Tracey, Lars Trodson, Buzz McLaughlin, Douglas Kennett and Thomas and Heidi Tosi.

Thank you to those who contributed quotes and photographs to the article. I know a good number of you had sent in submissions. I wish I had been able to have some input on the "At-A-Glance" sidebar of the piece, but the publicity is exciting, nonetheless.

Unfortunately, I've been unable to locate a copy of the article on the MovieMaker Magazine website, but the issue is available on newsstands now.

'My House is Worth What?' coming to New Hampshire

HGTV's "My House is Worth What?" is coming to New Hampshire.

Each week on "My House Is Worth What?" three homeowners in three different parts of the country work on making their home as valuable on the local housing market as possible. They get a professional assessment and evaluation from local market experts, then get the bottom line on how well their efforts paid off. Often the final number is a big surprise to the homeowner.

With the ups and downs of the current real estate market, it may be worth your while to find out what your home may sell for in today's market. If you appear on "My House is Worth What?" you'll get a free evaluation of your home by the experts and host Kendra Todd.

Todd is a real estate expert and the managing broker of the Kendra Todd Group, a real estate firm that matches buyers with properties that fit their goals and helps them achieve financial freedom. She was the first woman to win "The Apprentice," Donald Trump's show that pits businesspeople against each other to wind the grand prize of a job with Trump.

As a real estate broker, investor, entrepreneur, author and lecturer, she is dedicated to educating consumers and inspiring others to reach their financial goals and dreams.

The show's producers will shoot three or four homes when they visit the area. They've already chosen two, but still need to find the last couple of candidates.

Homeowners:

Do you own a home in within 20 minutes of Manchester/Concord?

Are you looking for a professional evaluation of your home's market value (comparing original purchase price with any renovations made to come up with a current sales price)?

Are you thinking of moving, downsizing or even upgrading into a new home?

Do you want to know what a recent upgrade or renovation has done to your overall home's value?

Do you want to take advantage of the equity in your home for a vacation around the world, your child's college or wedding?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, "My House is Worth What?" wants to hear your story.

You must submit a picture of yourself and home and you and your family must make the producers a video tour of your home, showing off the house and the projects you have done (or the projects you want to do if it's worth the money.)

Participants must be at least 18 years old.

To enter, go to http://www.pietown.tv/Shows/mhiww_applicationowners.html.

The shoots will be in New Hampshire in early June. The producers would like to hear from all interested homeowners by the end of April.

Warner Historical Society releases documentary

[Received this press release from our friend George Packard in Warner, NH about an upcoming screening of his new documentary.]

WARNER, NH--The Warner Historical Society will host the premier screening of its two-hour documentary movie, "This Morning Broke Clear: Warner, N.H. in the Wake of the Civil War, 1860-1900" at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, April 19, in the Warner Town Hall. Admission is free.

The movie is based on material from the historical society's extensive archives, including letters, diaries, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles and town reports and records. It was produced and filmed in Warner with the help of dozens of community volunteers and features Mary Morris, a Warner stage director and actor, as narrator. More than two dozen Warner residents contributed as voice-over actors. The theme music for the movie is by Warner composer Paul Knudson, and incidental music is by Warner area musicians and other New Hampshire performers.

The movie was written and directed by George Packard, a Warner movie maker. Rebecca Courser, executive director of the Warner Historical Society, served as the Research Director, and Marcia Blaine Schmidt, a professor at Plymouth State University, was the consulting historian and Project Humanist.

The project began in 2005 with a budget of $25,000 as a community arts project to produce a documentary movie which would tell the story of Warner and its people from the end of the Civil War to the turn of the century, 1860-1900.

The three decades following the Civil War was one of the most dynamic periods in the town's existence, and in many ways mirrored the profound changes that swept through other small towns across New England.

During these 40 years Warner built a high school, a library, founded one of the best annual agricultural fairs in the region, established social and civic organizations for the betterment of its citizens, and built a rich cultural and artistic life.

But like small towns across New England, Warner also struggled year after year against a faltering farm economy and three national economic depressions. The town attempted to reinvent itself as a center of tourism and small manufacturing during the 1870s and 1880s, but those efforts were challenged at almost every step by a dwindling population, increasing numbers of abandoned farms, falling property values, hotel and factory fires, economic downturns and business failures. Bitter political rivalries, a staggering debt left over from the Civil War and allegations of fraud and dirty tricks in the town hall persisted through the 1890s. Even so, Warner moved forward.

And if anything, the sense of identity, spirit and character of the town grew stronger and stronger, becoming, in an uncanny way, the basis for the Warner we live in today.

The Warner Historical Documentary Movie Project is a community effort with initial funding from the NH Charitable Foundation, NH Council on the Arts, the Warner Fall Foliage Festival and the NH Humanities Council. Major underwriting support to date is provided by Sugar River Savings, Warner Power, Warner Men's Club, the Margaret Courser Trust, Dick & Alice Violette, Microdaq.com.Ltd, the Payson Family, Clark and Jan Lindley, Phil Reeder, the Nancy Sibley Wilkins Trust, and others. Additional funding has been provided by more than 80 individuals and local businesses and organizations.

The movie is available for screening. DVDs can be purchased for $19.95.

For more information please contact contact George Packard: geopacko@gmail.com.

Back Lot Films produces PSAs for New Hampshire Department of Education

[Received this press release from our friends at Back Lot Films, Inc.]

Back Lot Films announces release of Public Service Announcements project for New Hampshire Department of Education.

Seven-part series focusing on high school dropout prevention written and performed by The Youth Voices, funded by the Workforce Opportunity Council and will air on Comcast and Time-Warner cable systems throughout New Hampshire.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Back Lot Films, a New Hampshire-based film & video production company, recently announced the release of the final three Public Service Announcements, produced for the New Hampshire Department of Education and funded by the Workforce Opportunity Council. In all, a total of seven 30-second PSA’s ("Teacher", "Mirrors", "Keys", "Pedro's Rap", "Leader", "Pizza" & "Stairwell") focusing on high school dropout prevention, were completed in 2007-2008; all written and produced by The Youth Voices (youth enrolled in WIA Youth funded programs that are a subcommittee of the State of NH Youth Council), and developed, in conjunction with Back Lot Films. The new spots, as with last year’s series, will be broadcast throughout New Hampshire on Comcast & Time-Warner cable systems.

“The fact that these spots dealt with such an important and critical theme made this an especially rewarding project for our company to be involved with,” said Bill Millios, President of Back Lot Films, Inc. “Developing and coordinating the production schedule using the student’s original scripts and then seeing it come alive during the shoot and edit was fascinating. There was definitely no shortage of creative ideas or writer’s block on the student’s part.”

Credits for the PSA’s include teachers and students from Franklin (NH) High, Farmington (NH) School District's Project Pride, My-Turn at Manchester (NH) Central High School and Nashua (NH) South High School, NH-JAG at Merrimack Valley Regional High School, Manchester (NH) West High School, Manchester (NH) Memorial High School, Woodsville (NH) High School and NHCTC-Manchester, Newport Junior Senior High School's CARES Program, and Southern NH Services Youth Empowerment Program. All seven PSA’s can be viewed on the Back Lot Films website at www.backlotfilm.com.

Back Lot Films, Inc. has produced and distributed a wide range of corporate and narrative productions since 1993, including the feature-length films Old Man Dogs (1997), Dangerous Crosswinds (2005), St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral 1905-2005 (2005) and the upcoming Death & Glory (2009). Corporate clients have included Pike Industries, the New Hampshire Veterans Home, Southern New Hampshire University and others. Back Lot is also a co-founder of the Digital Filmmaking Workshops.

"Communities and Consequences" to air on NHPTV

Communities and Consequences, a new documentary from award-winning New Hampshire filmmaker Jay B. Childs, will have its broadcast premiere on New Hampshire Public Television on Monday, April 14 at 8 p.m. and Wednesday, April 16 at 9 p.m.

Communities and Consequences is a film about the human ecology of New Hampshire. It addresses the loss of New Hampshire's young people through the human stories of people that are living out the consequences of demographic imbalance. Correspondent Peter Francese travels throughout the state to talk to business owners, town officials, young professionals and active citizens about the causes and effects of a rapidly aging state. The film confronts and questions many long held myths that have heavily influenced local development decisions, including those of explosive population growth, the aging of New Hampshire as simply a natural trend, and the belief that families with children will increase property taxes.

For more information on Communities and Consequences, or to pre-order a DVD copy of the film, visit www.communitiesandconsequences.org.

'Mirthquake' to showcase silent, early sound comedies

New England's largest vintage film festival runs April 17-20

MANCHESTER, N.H. — The legendary early years of Hollywood will come alive again during Mirthquake, a four-day festival the achievements (and occasional disasters) of the movie industry's pioneers. The festival, which runs from Thursday, April 17 to Sunday, April 20, features three full days of silent and early sound comedies free to the public at the Manchester, N.H. public library; evening screenings of classic silent feature films starring Harold Lloyd; and a day-long tour of southern New Hampshire's historic theaters.

"We planned this year's festival to give audiences a chance to experience the joy of early cinema as it was intended, on the big screen and with an audience," said event organizer Dave Stevenson of Manchester. "Also, our silent films will be accompanied by live music, which helps them come to life in a way that's hard to match at home or on video," he said.

The focus of this year's festival is legendary comedian Harold Lloyd, one of the most popular stars of Hollywood's silent film era. Lloyd, one of the 'big three' silent comedians along with Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, was known for his horn-rimmed glasses and 'everyman' character that audiences identified with. His films are known for their superior stories and production values, and often include action, chase, and stunt sequences that retain their ability to thrill audiences. The day-long screenings at the Manchester Public Library, 405 Pine St., Manchester, N.H. run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day on Thursday-Saturday, April 17-19, and are free and open to the public.

"We're glad to have the Manchester Public Library's auditorium as the home for our daytime screenings," Stevenson said. "It's a great venue, and by making the screenings free, we'll give a lot of people a chance to see unusual and interesting films with a great deal of historic interest. Also, it's a great way to help the library celebrate National Library Week."

Most movies slated for the daytime screenings are silent films dating from before 1930, but will be shown with live musical accompaniment, an essential ingredient for their effectiveness. Nearly 100 short films are lined up to be shown during the three days, grouped under such headings as "The Physics of Slapstick Comedy" and "The English Music Hall Comes to America." Introductions will be supplied by experts in early film history.

Many of the movies are one-of-a-kind prints on loan from collectors and institutions, including the Library of Congress and the Danish Film Institute. In many cases, the films have been preserved, restored, and transferred to DVD for digital storage and projection. Some movies, however, will be shown via traditional film projection.

In the evenings, Mirthquake turns its attention to the achievements of silent film star Harold Lloyd. Each night will feature one of Harold Lloyd's most popular silent films screened in its entirety with live musical accompaniment:

'Dr. Jack' (1922) on Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Franco-American Centre, 52 Concord St., Manchester N.H., $5 admission. Romance blossoms when young doctor takes on the case of a wealthy female hypochondriac. Program includes short films prior to feature.

'The Kid Brother' (1927) on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Franco-American Centre, 52 Concord St., Manchester N.H., $5 admission. A timid young man must find the courage to rescue his sheriff father from small-town vigilante justice. Program includes short films prior to feature.

'Speedy' (1928) on Saturday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Red River Theatres, 11 South Main St., Concord N.H., $10 admission. limited seating. Baseball-crazed youth must fight gangsters to save New York City's last horse-drawn streetcar. Program includes short films prior to feature.

'Safety Last' (1923) on Sunday, April 20 at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theatre, 80 Hanover St., Manchester N.H., $5 admission. A young man's efforts to make good in the big city leave him no choice but to climb a 12-story building to save his job and win the girl.

"After all these years, Harold Lloyd's films still work wonders when screened as they were intended, on the big screen with an audience and live music," Stevenson said. "Each of our evening screenings will include short films from the era as well. For each program, we're trying to recreate a night at the movies as your great-grandparents might have experienced it."

Other Mirthquake events include a screening tour of southern New Hampshire's historic theaters on Sunday, April 20. The day starts with 'Silent Rarities' on loan from the U.S. Library of Congress at 10 a.m. at the Ioka Theatre, 55 Water St., Exeter, N.H.; $5 admission. Then, at 2 p.m. the silent feature 'The Red Mill' (1927) starring Marion Davies will be screened at the Wilton Town Hall Theatre, Main Street, Wilton, N.H.; $5 admission. The tour will conclude with Lloyd's classic 'Safety Last' (1923) at the Palace Theatre, 80 Hanover St., Manchester, N.H., $5 admission.

"Few people realize that New Hampshire has theaters with historical interest," Stevenson said. "The Ioka was built as a movie house in 1915 by Louis B. Mayer of Haverhill, Mass., who later went on to be the legendary boss of MGM in Hollywood. The fact that the theater exists largely unchanged today is nothing short of miraculous, and it's a treat to show rare 35mm prints on the theater's old-fashioned carbon-arc projector."

Mirthquake was launched three years ago and has grown into the region's largest annual celebration of vintage films. Past Mirthquakes have attracted movie history buffs from Arizona, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and other locations.

Mirthquake sponsors include HippoPress, The Manchester Express, Looser Than Loose Visual Entertainment, The Manchester Public Library, The Franco-American Center, Red River Theatres, The Ioka Theatre, The Wilton Town Hall Theatre, The Palace Theatre, Back Lot Films and Lunchbox Films, the Taste of Europe Function Room, and Easter Seals of New Hampshire.

(Munsonville, NH) - New Hampshire-based Either/Or Films is pleased to announce the acquisition of their first independent feature THE SENSATION OF SIGHT by Monterey Media, Thousand Oaks, California. A late summer/early fall theatrical release is planned, followed by a winter DVD release.

THE SENSATION OF SIGHT, filmed entirely in Peterborough, NH, stars Academy Award Best Actor nominee David Strathairn, who is also one of the film's producers along with Either/Or Films partners Aaron J. Wiederspahn, the film's writer/director, and Buzz McLaughlin, executive producer.

Other producers include Strathairn's longtime manager Madeline Ryan and Darren Moorman, both of Los Angeles; and Mark Constance of Brentwood, New Hampshire.

The film has received accolades from festival audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad, including Spain, Brazil, China, Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia, and continues to garner critical acclaim. It won Best Feature at the New Hampshire Film Festival and Best Cinematography at the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa.

Monterey CFO Jere Rae-Mansfield enthusiastically remarks, "On the heels of our tremendous success with audience favorite STEEL TOES, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to distribute our second film starring David Strathairn."

McLaughlin says Either/Or Films is honored to be partnering with Monterey Media. "We've had a great run at festivals on five continents, and now look forward to making THE SENSATION OF SIGHT available to audiences throughout the United States and Canada."

Monterey Media holds all North American rights to the film. McLaughlin reports Either/Or Films is currently in negotiation for foreign distribution.

A fusion of dream/reality, THE SENSATION OF SIGHT contemplates relationships, communication, and the meaning of life as it follows Finn (Strathairn), a middle-aged English teacher whose involvement with a tragedy has left him asking the age-old question, "Why?" Leaving his family and career, he sets about selling encyclopedias to town locals, including Dylan (Daniel Gillies of SPIDERMAN 2), a former student who's estranged from his father (Scott Wilson of JUNEBUG) and sister (Elisabeth Waterston of THE PRINCE AND ME); Alice (Jane Adams of ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND), a waitress and single mother with whom he has a brief and awkward romantic encounter; and Drifter (Ian Somerhalder of LOST), a musician grieving the death of his brother (Joe Mazello of JURASSIC PARK). The interaction of these characters affects and alters each of them, ultimately leading Finn to an unexpected and sublime awakening.

Students, graduates looking for work in New Hampshire

New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival approaching

Submissions for first-ever New Hampshire High School Short Film Festival have been arriving at the New Hampshire Film and Television Office for weeks, reflecting the state’s wide pool of talented young filmmakers—and their interests.

Designed to foster and reward interest in film for future members of the industry, the Festival is open to students currently enrolled in New Hampshire public or private high schools (grades 9-12), although submissions do not have to have been created as part of a school project. In addition to providing students with a public venue for showing their work, the Festival is also a great way for students to build their resumes and make their college applications stand out.

The deadline to submit films to the competition is April 4, 2008. They must arrive at the State Library in Concord by 4 p.m. on that date.

A panel of judges made up of New Hampshire film professionals will select films to be shown at the Festival, which takes place at New Hampshire Technical Institute’s Sweeney Hall Auditorium in Concord on May 17, beginning at noon. Five winning films will be packaged onto a DVD, which will also include brief interviews with the films’ respective directors. Copies of the DVD will be distributed to every community access television station in the state for future broadcast.

Rules and guidelines, film submission forms and other festival information can be found online at www.nhstudentfilm.com.

New Hampshire-based Stagewright Films to shoot film at Granite Media Center

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Brad Branch
Stagewright Films
(603) 494-2284
brad@stagewrightfilms.com

Stagewright Films, the newly formed New Hampshire-based production company has just finalized casting on the first of a series of feature films melding the two worlds of live theatre and film. Stagewright has just signed Los Angeles actors Matthew Jaeger and Robert Mammana to star in David J. Mauriello's two man story JUST SAY LOVE. Granite Media Center in Tilton, NH has been chosen as the production facility and JUST SAY LOVE will be the first major project to be produced at the new production facility. Both Stagewright and GMC are planning to make the most out of the state-of-the-art facility. Stagewright has also signed with Funny Boy Films of Los Angeles as distributor and production administration.

A collaboration between three-time Emmy Award winning Producer/Director Bill Humphreys and multiple award winning Executive Producer/Writer David J. Mauriello, Stagewright Films was created to blend the worlds of live theatre and motion pictures on screen. Humphreys states that "…through the use of theatrical staging techniques we will set time and locale in an abstract way to support the theme and personality of the stories we tell which will allow us to focus on the content and the performance. With the vast storehouse of well-written stage plays which, for many reasons, may never be produced, Stagewright was formed to offer a venue where quality work can reach a larger audience."

JUST SAY LOVE is the first in the series of projects to be produced by Stagewright Films. Mauriello originally wrote the script for stage. Humphreys has crafted the screen adaptation and will serve as director. The stage version of JUST SAY LOVE premiered at the Player's Ring in Portsmouth, NH and was recently nominated in the Best New Play category by the Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards and the Best Original Script category by the Spotlight on the Arts awards. Over the past year it has been mounted in both Boston and Chicago. There are plans for several other productions of JUST SAY LOVE in the coming months at venues across the country.

Casting recently took place in Los Angeles and Mammana and Jaeger were booked within days. Recent regional auditions brought some exceptional local talent to the forefront as well. They are being kept on tap for future projects.

The crew has been assembled from all over the U.S. and the company received interest from outside the States including the U.K., Spain and as far away as Tel Aviv. Other members of the Stagewright production team include: Kirkland Tibbels as Executive Producer; Bradshaw Branch as Co-Producer/Press Relations and Tyler Heon as Co-Producer/Production Manager. Nate Beaman of Burlington, VT will serve as Director of Photography.

Shooting is scheduled to begin May 5 and run through the end of the month with all principal photography being done entirely on site at the GMCNH studio. Once completed the film will be distributed by Funny Boy Films, out of LA whose most recent hit is the film version of Broadway's NAKED BOYS SINGING.
