The NH Film Archive, the Keene State Film Department, and the deRochemont Film Archive played a part in Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards when Ernest Borgnine was recognized for his lifetime achievement in acting.
Last week in a quick turn-around at SAG’s request, Shaler McReel, Louis deRochemont’s grandson, gave permission to use an excerpt from Whistle at Eaton Falls, Borgnine’s first film. Whistle was shot in 1950 in NH’s seacoast by producer, Louis deRochemont, a maverick, independent NH filmmaker.
Since Whistle doesn’t exist in digital form, Larry Benaquist found the16mm print in the Keene State Film Vault and shipped it to Gary Anderson at the NH Film Archive in Deerfield.
Anderson transferred the black and white clip of Borgnine via telecine and shipped it to LA as a digital file. Last night that excerpt was part of a retrospective of Borgnine’s career in film and television.
