THE POND, a dramatic short film, has won the 2010 Directorial Discovery Grand Prize Award at the 14th Annual Rhode Island International Film Festival. This is the film's first award and the first award for writer/director Dan Hannon.

Hannon attended the film's east coast premiere screening at the festival, accompanied by the film's producer Francine DiChiara, editor Michael Bernard and supporting actors Todd Rotondi and Bill Conner. Hannon was also in attendance during the awards ceremony, where the festival's Executive Director George Marshall presented him with the top award recognizing outstanding achievement in a directorial debut.

"To see the film screened in such a stunning venue, to receive the great audience response it generated, and then to be honored with this amazing award is simply incredible. I'm blown away right now," beamed Hannon. "I'm so thankful for everyone that came onboard this project with me and I also want to extend a big thanks to the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Having been selected to screen out of more than 4,200 submissions and then to receive this distinction feels truly amazing," he added.

THE POND is a moving and surprising story about a young woman distraught over the death of her husband, who sets about scattering his ashes in a place they had both loved and in doing so makes a discovery for which no one could ever be prepared. The richly cinematic film was shot entirely in the picturesque state of New Hampshire and represents the directorial debut of writer Dan Hannon, who also penned the original screenplay.

Joining the writer/director are the recognizable onscreen talents of Alicia Witt, currently on NBC's "Friday Night Lights," David Morse, most recently seen in 2010 Academy Award® Best Picture THE HURT LOCKER, and Todd Rotondi, who made a splash as Jack Kerouac in 2010 Sundance Film Festival hit HOWL. The powerful story also attracted offscreen talents including producer Francine DiChiara, cinematographer Jendra Jarnagin and composer Justin R. Durban.

The 2010 Rhode Island International Film Festival took place August 10-15 in Providence, RI. To learn more about the festival, visit www.film-festival.org.
