New Hampshire-made films "Wicked Funny" and "Meet Billy Joe Anthony" to screen at Red River Theatres July 31

Two documentary films, both centering on aspiring local comedians, will be screened at Red River Theater in Concord on July 31st.

"Wicked Funny," directed by Manchester filmmaker Lisa Romagnoli, focuses on the blossoming comedy scene in her home town and the cast of characters behind it. Romagnoli, who interned with New Hampshire’s resident documentary film guru Ken Burns, and also graduated NYU’s prestigious film school, laces comedic moments on stage with off-stage interviews of the comedians, exploring the “why” alongside the “what-if” of the scene, potential fame, and laughs.

Nicholas Lavallee’s film "Meet Billy Joe Anthony" focuses directly on the life of one Manchester performer. Billy Joe Anthony is funny, charming, sad and hopeful all in one. This short-form character study follows Anthony while he performs on stages in front of large, laughing audiences in open mics across New England. Between shows, Billy is painfully shy, suffers from autism and dreams of making it big so he can "give his friends money." Billy tells his story alone, giving the film a poignant, touching tone inside the mind of a troubled, gifted performer. Meet Billy Joe Anthony features the music of Manchester musician Tristan Omand.

Both short films will be screened back-to-back, followed by a short question and answer session with the filmmakers and selected guests. Two showings are scheduled at 7PM and 8PM.
