Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire presents upcoming White Mountain National Forest Artists-in-Residence programs

[Our friends at the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire have sent along information on upcoming programs surrounding their White Mountain National Forest Artists-in-Residence. The AANNH is also looking for volunteer videographers to help document these events and public work. Sounds like a great program! Details below:]

Artists in Residence for Special Events July 22, 26 & 28
Come to participate, volunteer or just watch!  Everyone is welcome!

WE NEED YOUR HELP: Can you take photographs or video? Are you a dancer? A visual artist? Do you play trumpet or trombone? We have a special role for you! For additional information, or to volunteer, call the Arts Alliance at 323-7302 or email info@aannh.org.

Eco artist Xavier Cortada and composer Juan Carlos Espinosa of Miami, Florida, who spent the first two weeks of their residency exploring the Forest and interacting with Forest Service employees and scientists, are offering four public sessions during which residents, visitors and artists in all disciplines are invited to learn more about - and participate in - the artistic process, and explore the connections between art, the forest and conservation. The sessions are loosely tied to Earth (Terra), Water (Aqua), Wind (Aer) and Fire (Ignis):   

Surrender at Tunnel Brook (Aqua)
Sunday, July 22nd, 2012 at 10 am.
A participatory public performance where individuals will engage in the futile attempt of rerouting the flow of a brook to conditions prior to the natural disturbance caused by Tropical Storm Irene. We will also create an installation placing white flags along a line where a man-made road ran prior to being washed away by Tropical Storm Irene. WMNF Hydrologist Sheela Johnson will join Cortada in explaining the storm event.  All are welcome!   Dancers of all ages -- we would love to have your improvisational help at this event! Where: Participants should meet at the gate on Tunnel Brook Road located west of Woodstock, NH. ( I-93 to Exit 32, travel west on NH Route 112, turn left onto Tunnel Brook Road and it is approximately 1.5 miles to the gate)

Wind Words  (Aer)

A ritualistic installation to honor the scientists who work at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest.  Cortada and Lindsey Rustad of Hubbard Brook will talk about how they use science and art to understand the forest.
Where: C.L. Graham Wangan Overlook along the Kancamagus Scenic Byway, Highway Route 112.

Hill Farm Dinner Party  (Ignis)

A performative work where NH artists share a potluck meal on the ruins of a farmhouse in Thornton Gore, eating foods that might have been farmed onsite (or that evoke those foods) before the space was reclaimed by nature. Cortada, along with WMNF Heritage Program Leader Terry Fifield and WMNF Archaeologist Sara Jordan, will lead discussion about the importance of archeological sites and the human history of the White Mountain National Forest.  Come if you're an artist or if you're interested in land, farm and food history! Where: From I-93 take exit 31, turn right on to Tripoli road, travel approximately 1.5 miles just after the trailer on the right you'll cross a bridge.  Park in the wide area on the right.

Time/Space Species: Glacial relics and the thrush (Terra):

An exhibit of works created by Cortada during his residency that focuses on three sensitive species living in the White Mountain National Forest, allowing us to see nature through the prism of space (global migration and habitat change) and time (evolution: glacial relics, evolving subspecies). The exhibit will include artists' talks by Cortada and Espinosa -- along with a performance of a new, forest-inspired composition by Espinosa.

The White Mountain National Forest Artist in Residence program is a collaboration, now in its second year, between the WMNF and the Arts Alliance.
