New NH TV Show Weds Reality TV to Game Show Fun

[Received this press release from George C. Jobel.]

A new concept TV show, Iron Brides™ will be taping this November in New Hampshire to air early 2009. Part reality TV, part game show, part wedding plan primer, the show gives eight brides-to-be the opportunity to compete for great prizes.

Concord, NH -- In a little more than a month, the cameras will be rolling to shoot Iron Brides™, a new reality TV game show slated to air in early 2009. The first 13 episodes of this fresh concept show will thrust eight brides-to-be together to compete. Each contestant will be given demanding tasks of planning their weddings, as well as be tested in life skills, athletic abilities, personality and more.

The victorious bride will walk away with a dream wedding package that includes a $9,000 photography and videography package, along with prizes planned to be offered by sponsors, including limousines, catering, custom invitations, bridal party hair and makeup for the big day.

The show's director, Jeffery Thayer of ReGenesis Films, is planning on capturing all of those special moments that go into planning a beautiful lifetime event. And because of the competition, he is sure there will be plenty of personal fears and tears exposed, along with joys, sweat and a few catfights. Thayer adds, "Not only should it be fun to watch and act as a wedding planning primer, but the viewer also gets to vote on who deserves to win the grand prize."

Iron Brides™ is believed to have a few firsts in television. Besides being the first reality show to be shot in New Hampshire, there will be special live webcasts of the day's events during the taping schedule. Iron Brides™ is also thought to be the first U.S. reality show shot and broadcast regionally via cable, instead of a traditional national broadcast, and to use Twitter (http://www.twitter.com) to stay in touch with its fans. Taping begins this November in New Hampshire.

The show's creators have sent out the casting calls, and have said the response is tremendous. In addition to brides-to-be, the production company is also looking for a local host, skilled video production artists, as well as entertainers (including a comedian and a band). Interested applicants are told to upload their audition clip to the show's YouTube site (http://www.YouTube.com/ironbrides).

For additional information about Iron Brides™, contact George C. Jobel, Executive Producer at 603.369.1471 or visit the show's web site, http://www.IronBrides.TV.

New screenplay reading series kicks off with "Plowing Up A Snake"

The New Hampshire Film and Television Office, in partnership with Red River Theatres, is proud to launch its new Screenplay Reading Series on October 9, 2008 at 7 p.m. at Red River Theatres in Concord with a reading of Plowing Up A Snake, written by award-winning New Hampshire screenwriter Dana Biscotti Myskowski and adapted from the novel by Merle Drown.

The Screenplay Reading Series will showcase new motion picture scripts read live by actors before an audience, followed by Q&A, creating a unique movie-going experience. The series focuses on the craft of cinematic storytelling, long before a frame of film is shot, and is dedicated to fostering a forum where screenwriters can hear their words come to life and network with actors, potential film investors, and other artists involved in filmmaking.

Plowing Up A Snake tells the story of a trio of vigilantes who murder the most hated man in the seemingly idyllic village of Enoch, New Hampshire. Clay Freeman, a man who believes evil deeds can be corrected through hard work, goes plowing up a snake in search of answers and redemption. When townsfolk refuse to talk, Clay divulges the identities of the men to the newly anointed, and vengeful, widow.

The Screenplay Reading Series presents works on an invitation-only basis (a submission process is forthcoming) and screenplays must have an emphasis on New Hampshire, either in their setting or their potential to be filmed in the Granite State. The screenplays are read in an intimate setting at Red River Theatres by actors cast into the screenplay’s respective roles by a director who works with the writer specifically for the reading. Screenplay readings can last anywhere between ninety minutes to two hours.

With three screenplay readings held throughout the course of a year, audiences have the rare opportunity to “listen” to a film script, take part in a dialogue with the writer afterward, and hear the artistic conversation that happens “behind-the-scenes.”

Tickets are $8 and are available at the Red River Theatres box office or online. Information on the Screenplay Reading Series can also be found at the website for the New Hampshire Film and Television Office. Visit Red River Theatres online at www.redrivertheatres.org.

Seacoast Native Wins Top Award at Lovecraft Film Festival

[Thanks to Jeff Palmer for sending this info along.]

Jeff Palmer
, a Dover, New Hampshire native and filmmaker, has reason to be shocked. His feature-length screenplay "The Sleeping Deep" took Top Honors at this year's H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, a festival devoted to the works and fans of the late great Gothic horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

Nearly four years of on-and-off again writing culminated into what has been described as a "nightmare parade" says festival director, Andrew Migliore. "It rose to the top..." of the submissions and garnered the prestigious First Place among stiff competition.

While a total deviation from his 2001 independent mill-town film "On the Fringe" (www.onthefringemovie.com) that was shot in Dover and the seacoast area, Palmer's new script still takes place in New England, but not his hometown or home state.

"Most of the script takes place in Maine. Even though we've been in California for five years now, I still can't get New England out of my blood. I guess I consider the northeast my muse." Palmer confides. "It was home for Lovecraft and it's home for me."

The script, a whopper of a read, is not an adaptation of Lovecraft's works but more of a "nod to one of the masters of macabre" Palmer explains. "I wanted to write something totally different from my last feature, something way, way out there in terms of scope and content."

Part supernatural thriller, part murder mystery, part old-fashioned B-movie fun, "The Sleeping Deep" promises to keep an audience guessing and, with any luck, show up on a producer's radar.

"In no way does this set me up for big Hollywood meetings," Palmer admits. "But it may just open a few doors... doors to an unknown and terrifying land..."

The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival takes place Oct. 3-5 in Portland, Oregon where Palmer and his wife Rebecca will attend the festivities and mingle with fellow fans of the Lovecraft following.

"I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't shocked. But in a good way." Palmer adds.

2009 Artist Fellows Includes New Hampshire Filmmaker

For immediate release
Contact: Jane Eklund
Programs Information Officer
New Hampshire State Council on the Arts
603-271-0791, jane.eklund@dcr.nh.gov

2009 Artist Fellows Named

CONCORD - Two writers, a filmmaker, a potter and a composer – the just-named batch of Artists Fellows is a diverse and accomplished one. With the aid of funds awarded by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the new fellows will be busy in their studios in the upcoming year, as well as sharing their talents with the people of the state.

Fiction writer Clark Knowles of Portsmouth, poet Jennifer Militello of Goffstown, potter Hideaki Miyamura of Kensington, composer Lawrence Siegel of Westmoreland and filmmaker Hilary Weisman Graham of Francestown each received a $5,000 award.

Knowles, who teaches in the English Department at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, has a novel and short story collection circulating among publishing houses. He plans to use the award to finish a new novel, “Onward and Outward,” which takes place over the course of 10,000 years. “It’s a risky piece of writing,” he says of the book inspired by the Indonesian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.

Militello, a faculty member at River Valley Community College in Claremont, has published a chapbook, “Anchor Chain, Open Sail.” Her first full-length collection, “History of the Always Pain,” is due out in the spring from Tupelo Press. She’ll use the $5,000 to take the summer off from her teaching job so she can complete a new manuscript, “Body Thesaurus.” The award, she says, is a huge boost: “It’s just like somebody saying to you, Great: you’re worth some support.”

Miyamura has been conjuring up new glazes ever since his childhood in Japan, where he came across Tenmoku glazes from China’s Sung Dynasty. Right now he’s developing one he calls “Yohen Crystal.” “My goal is to try to evoke a feeling of inner peace and tranquility,” says Miyamura, who will use the award funds to help offset costs of a new, large kiln.

Siegel is known to many in the Monadnock region and across the state for his collaborative Verbatim Projects, in which he promotes civic engagement by working with towns, schools and organizations to put together performances. He plans to use his fellowship award, though, for a more solitary pursuit: composing chamber music. “I’ve made it a point to live an artist’s life,” says Siegel, who moved to New Hampshire after spending time at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough.

With a Top 10 finish in the Fox network’s filmmaking reality series “On the Lot,” Graham already has experience with the Los Angeles film world. As she writes in her artist’s statement, though, “My work is an antidote to mainstream cinema.” Her short films have been screened at festivals in cities including Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York, and countries including Sweden and Portugal. She’ll use her fellowship money to complete two screenplays and shoot a short film.

Fellowships are granted in three categories: Visual & Media Arts, Performing Arts, and Literary Arts. Selections are made based on artistic excellence, as determined by work samples and professional commitment. As part of the fellowship requirement, each fellow will present a Report to the New Hampshire Community, which can be a performance, a reading, an exhibition, a blog, or some other form of publicizing the artist’s work.

The deadline to apply for a 2010 Artist Fellowship is April 10, 2009.

Funding for the awards comes from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

HOY 17 DE SEPT. APAGÓN!

Bueno, navegando por el facebook me llego una invitación de unirme a este evento. Me pareció realmente interesante y estoy dispuesta a hacerlo.

'Elevation' to screen at New Hampshire Film Festival

[Received this press release from Lars Trodson at Roundtable Pictures in Rollinsford, NH.]

PORTSMOUTH, NH - Roundtable Pictures is proud to announce that its short film, “Elevation”, has been named an official selection of the 8th annual New Hampshire Film Festival.

Roundtable Pictures, based in Rollinsford, NH, was founded by filmmakers Mike Gillis and Lars Trodson in 2007. “Elevation” is the third film collaboration between Gillis and Trodson that has been selected as an official entry of the NHFF. Previous selections include “The Listeners”, which won Best Short Drama in 2005, and the ambitious musical comedy “A Bootful of Fish” in 2006.

The NHFF is scheduled to begin Oct. 16 at The Music Hall in Portsmouth.

“‘Elevation’ represents everything that Lars and I have tried to learn about filmmaking over the past three years. We wanted to create not only a great piece of cinema, but also we wanted to bring to life vivid characters with great dialogue,” said Gillis. “We wanted this to be as much about storytelling on film as it is about the characters within the movie itself, and it’s great to receive the validation from the NHFF that we succeeded on a very high level.”

‘Elevation” stars Lisa Stathoplos and Gregg Trzaskowski, who starred in the Trodson scripted feature-length film “Family Trees” more than a decade ago. “Family Trees” was an official selection of the very first New Hampshire Film Expo ( as it was called then) back in 2001. Stathoplos and Trzaskowski are two of the region’s most highly respected actors, and they have each worked in film, television, commercials and stage for more than 20 years.

The film chronicles a brief but tense and revealing conversation between a worker named Scott (Trzaskowski) and his supervisor Natalie (Stathoplos) about whether or not Scott deserves a raise. The film raises emotional and even spiritual questions about the responsibilities we have to each other in and out of work.

“We’re especially proud of the selection by the NHFF because this film was made by four primary contributors. That is not a fictional number. This film was conceived, written, directed, acted, set-designed, costumed, financed and edited by four of us,” said Trodson. “To honor that process, we think we’ve done something unusual, but which is also a gesture of the true nature of independent film. While each of us made individual contributions, the credits at the end of the film simply read: ‘A film by Mike Gillis, Lisa Stathoplos, Lars Trodson and Gregg Trzaskowski. That’s it.”

Trodson said “there was little point in parsing out individual credits, because if one of us was not able to put in an equal amount of time and effort to make the film, ‘Elevation’ wouldn’t have been made. We wanted to honor that.”

Gillis also pointed out that nothing in the film, from the sound design, to the artwork within the film itself, to the way the film was photographed (the camera never moves within a specific shot), to the content of the ending credits and even the font used for the titles, was left to chance.

“Everything here was thought through,” said Gillis, “And what we hope you see on screen is a film that, although brief, will give an audience the kind of emotional satisfaction that any real movie is supposed to provide.”

The dates and times of the 2008 New Hampshire Film Festival have not yet been announced. For more information about Roundtable Pictures, please go to www.roundtablepictures.com.

Momento WAYFARER

WayFarer:

NH Charitable Foundation Grant Brings Film "Including Samuel" To Schools

[Received this press release from the University of New Hampshire.]

The Institute on Disability (IOD) at the University of New Hampshire has received a $25,000 grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation to support free screenings of the film "Including Samuel" to schools throughout New Hampshire. The grant will enable Dan Habib, filmmaker in residence at the IOD and creator of "Including Samuel," to bring the film to ten New Hampshire districts this school year. Schools can apply for a free screening at www.iod.unh.edu.

The grant will also support additional screenings for New Hampshire parents, health care professionals, self-advocates and policy makers, plus distribution of free copies of the "Including Samuel" educational DVD.

Before his son Samuel was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Habib rarely thought about the educational inclusion of people with disabilities. Now he thinks about inclusion every day. Habib's award-winning 2008 documentary "Including Samuel" chronicles the Habib family's efforts to include Samuel in every facet of their lives. The film honestly portrays his family's hopes and struggles as well as the experiences of four other individuals with disabilities and their families. "Including Samuel" is a highly personal film that captures the cultural and systemic barriers to inclusion in schools.

"Dan Habib is a gifted artist exploring the multilayered stories of people with disabilities, their families, friends and teachers," said Jennifer Hopkins, director of grantmaking at the Charitable Foundation. "We were pleased to support the development of this extraordinary film and now to make it available to schools across the state."

"Including Samuel" has been screened at universities, national conferences, film festivals and independent theatres across the country. The film has also been featured on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and Good Morning America NOW, as well as in the Washington Post and the Boston Globe. Exceptional Parent Magazine called it a "must see" film.

These screenings are part of the IOD's Including Samuel Project, a program that leverages the IOD's expertise and Habib's documentary as resources to promote greater acceptance and inclusion of children with disabilities in schools and communities. Habib left the Concord Monitor in April to join the IOD and direct the Including Samuel Project.

"The Sensation of Sight" now on DVD

[From our friends at Either/Or Films...]

Greetings from Either/Or Films!

We're pleased to announce that The Sensation of Sight, starring Academy Award Best Actor nominee David Strathairn, is now available throughout the U.S. for purchase or rental at Amazon, Netflix, Blockbuster, Barnes & Noble, etc.--everywhere DVDs are sold or rented.

Recent reviews after its New York theatrical run come from The New York Post, which praises David's "splendid performance," and the Village Voice, which dubs The Sensation of Sight "Moving, charming, and universally well acted." The New York Times cites its cinematography, saying it "has visual pizazz to spare."

Box Office Magazine calls The Sensation of Sight "Exemplary American filmmaking," giving kudos to its "superb performances. Strathairn is both charming and empathetic; he is as much a delight to watch as Bill Murray in Lost in Translation or Broken Flowers."

And Prairie Miller of NewsBlaze.com writes: "Like a delicately designed patchwork quilt, The Sensation of Sight is crafted from the odds and ends of its characters, then ultimately surprises with its fusion of introspection and emotion...David Strathairn's Finn imparts a metaphorical healing vision of a restored life."

Meanwhile, The Sensation of Sight's theatrical run continues, with an upcoming opening in Seattle September 10.

2008 New Hampshire Film Festival draws a record 600 entries

[From the New Hampshire Film Festival in Portsmouth.]

The New Hampshire Film Festival, slated for Oct. 16 – 19 in downtown Portsmouth, drew more than 600 entries by the Aug. 22 deadline for submissions, making the 2008 field the largest in the festival's eight-year history.

“The volume of submissions speaks to both the success of the New Hampshire Film Festival and the real need for a quality venue where filmmakers can share their work,” said Nicole Gregg, NHFF festival director. “We are fortunate to be inundated with so many films. The quality of this year's field is certainly impressive.”

The total number of NHFF submissions has risen from about 500 in 2007, about 300 in 2006, and about 100 in 2005. The 2008 NHFF also received a record number of entries from New Hampshire filmmakers. More than 50 original Granite State films were submitted. Also up are the number of original scripts submitted to the screenplay competition, which tripled to 94 entries.

Event organizers say the popularity of the festival means that films face greater competition for acceptance, resulting in higher caliber screenings. Tickets are available at The Music Hall Box Office (603.436.2400, www.themusichall.org) or by calling the festival at 603.647.6439.

“Each year, we learn a little more and build up more of a name for NHFF,” said Dan Hannon, NHFF communications director and co-founder. “The exposure, the professional presentation, and the networking that our festival provides to independent filmmakers has improved every year, drawing more submissions, and producing even better screenings.”

NHFF begins the third Thursday in October with New Hampshire Night. The four-day festival will screen more than 60 domestic and international films through Sunday. Ten Portsmouth venues, including The Music Hall, will host screenings, professional workshops, networking events, industry expert panels, and after parties.
