A screening and DVD release of THE BUSKER, written and directed by 2007 New Hampshire Film Festival New Hampshire Filmmaker of the Year award winner and Londonderry resident Stephen Croke will be held on Friday, December 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Adams Memorial Opera House, 29 West Broadway, Derry.
Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door. Director Stephen Croke will be available for a Q&A following the screening.
THE BUSKER is a provocative coming of age drama to which John Kelleher, the Official Film Censor of Ireland, says, “I watched The Busker last night and really, really liked it…[the] two excellent young leads were so natural and appealing… most impressive.”
After the tragic death of his father, Seamus, a young busker (street musician), falls for a free-spirited African-American girl. Their developing relationship is threatened by the racial tension that surrounds them and an opportunity presented to Seamus by an unlikely stranger.
Set during the snow-filled Christmas season, and filmed by award-winning cinematographer Lukas Ettlin, THE BUSKER has previously screened at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Harvard Film Archive, and numerous film festivals.
Stephen Croke’s screenplay for THE BUSKER was selected as a semi-finalist from over 5,000 scripts in the Academy of Motion Picture's Nicholl Fellowship Awards (oscars.com), “regarded as the nation's most prestigious competition for aspiring screenwriters.” He received his Master’s degree from the University of Southern California.
Lukas Ettlin has been the cinematographer on such films as the THE LINCOLN LAWYER, starring Matthew McConaughey, Columbia Pictures’ BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, and SHRINK, starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams, as well as music videos for 50 Cent, Usher, Elvis Costello, and Marilyn Manson to name a few.
Liam O’Maonlai, lead singer of the Irish band Hothouse Flowers, plays the role of Patrick O’Mallie and also provides music. Liam was called "the best white soul singer in the world" by U2’s Bono, one of the many music legends with whom Liam has recorded.
Several Irish bands contributed music to the movie’s soundtrack, including Hothouse Flowers, Luka Bloom, Kila, Aine Minogue, and Cormac Breatnach.
Chris Trapper, known for his song "This Time," the number one selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for Warner Bros’. AUGUST RUSH (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers), has a cameo and also supplied a song.
